A delay in introducing over-the-counter derivatives regulations beyond the July 16 deadline could throw billions of dollars of the instruments into legal limbo unless regulators come up with a short-term solution. As it currently stands now, once the deadline passes and the new laws under the Dodd-Frank Act are not introduced, the derivatives lose legal protection under the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000.
